Remembering Montie

ASTAL at Rhode Island College ABOUT MONTIE

Montie, an English teacher at Shea High School in Pawtucket, was a key member of our planning committee and an original member of the ASTAL Committee who actively participated in all ASTAL projects and activities from its inception. Montie was a tireless worker and leader, always helpful and supportive of others.

In May of 2003, Montie Ciarlo completed his English major and secondary certification, earning 2nd BA degree at RIC. After a wonderful student teaching experience at Toll Gate High School, he chose a job at Pawtucket's Shea High School.  Montie made a remarkable journey on his way to becoming an English teacher.  Prior to teaching, he was a successful college administrator, cooking show host, newspaper columnist, and businessman, but he was always a teacher at heart.

In a memorable, albeit far too short, career, he brought together his love of literature, commitment to quality writing, and insights about film and media to touch the lives of his students.

His sudden and untimely death in December 2004 is an immeasurable loss to all of us who knew and loved him.

ASTAL at Rhode Island College MONTIE CIARLO EDUCATOR GRANTS

As a permanent tribute to Montie Ciarlo, ASTAL has established two grants to cover registration and conference fees for the Under the Spell of Books Annual Conference. These grants will be given annually to teachers or librarians, regardless of years of service. All teachers and librarians are invited to apply or to nominate a colleague. Recipients will be acknowledged at the conference and receive a certificate as well as the payment of all conference fees.

The thing I remember best about Montie is his smile,
which made everyone around him feel calm and welcome,
and he was the kind of person who took care of things.

He is deeply missed. - Jennifer Moretti

I remember Montie for his wonderful good humor,
which was combined with deep feeling and a serious intellect.

He always reminded me of a character actor from the wonderful movies
of the 30's and 40's. They don't make them that way anymore.

He is missed. - Kelly Easton

Every time I see a PT Cruiser, I expect to see Montie
behind the wheel. Every time I sit at an ASTAL meeting,
I expect to see Montie's kind face across the table.

It's still hard to believe he no longer graces us
with his physical presence, but he is with us in spirit always.

-Jennifer Basile

Montie - we miss your quick and hearty laugh, your deep caring,
and unfailing friendship. I think of you every day.

Love, Pete

The more time I spent with Montie the more I understood that I was listening
to a true renaissance man. He had so many colorful stories about his past
careers, his family and the multitude of endeavors he was currently involved in.
I learned so much from him and always looked forward to his calming smile.

I miss that smile and all of the stories I never got to hear.

-- Christa

Montie, you are truly missed. We love you and
we are thinking about you.

Montie, my friend and good right arm,
Thank you for the gifts of your friendship, your irrepressible humor,
your sense of joy, your calming solidarity, and your quiet,
but effective way of making things all come together.

I miss you, but you will always live in my heart.

-Jean
