ASTAL Book Club

Do you have trouble making time to read the latest books for young people?

We have the solution:
Join the 2007-08 ASTAL Book Club

The Book Club is designed to:

  • provide an opportunity to read current young adult books;
  • establish a community of teachers and librarians who can share their knowledge and interests in YA literature;
  • use the resources that ASTAL is developing; and
  • earn graduate three credits in English.

ASTAL at Rhode Island College Monthly Meetings
Each participant will read two books (One a common book for all participants and the second readers choice) each month and come prepared to talk about both books. Additionally, participants will prepare an annotation one paragraph in length of the optional book. Additionally, participants will be expected to attend ASTAL Author events.

ASTAL at Rhode Island College Attendance
All participants must attend at least 80% of the sessions to be eligible to register for the Summer 1 session and receive the three credits for English 550.  The week following the conclusion of the school year, the participants will meet to work together to create standard-based teaching materials and units for the books we have been discussing.  Attendance in these sessions is mandatory.
